About the farmer and farm

The Humure washing station is unusual in Rwanda for being run entirely by women. It's located in the Gatsibo district of the Eastern Province, at 1624 meters above sea level.

The station is operated by Baho Coffee, founded in 2013 by Rusatira Emmanuel, who today manages four washing stations across Rwanda.

The farms supplying cherry sit at 1550–1835 meters, growing mostly the Red Bourbon variety.

The station is named after the tallest hill in the area. It supports farmers with training, interest-free loans, and seedling distribution to renew aging plantings.

Processing: natural

Ripe cherries are selectively hand-picked by farmers and their families, choosing only quality fruit.

At the station, cherry is hand-sorted and floated to check density, and the selected fruit moves on to raised beds.

Drying takes an average of 47 days — a deliberately slow process that, according to the station's founder, gives the coffee a richer, longer-lasting flavor.
