About the farmer and farm

Kochere sits in the highlands of the Yirgacheffe region, at 1800-2100 meters above sea level, where fertile, acidic volcanic loam soils combine with a cool climate and steady rainfall of 1592-2220 mm a year.

Smallholder farmers grow coffee in shaded garden plots using traditional, low-input methods, often intercropping their trees with food plants.

The region is known for its diverse Ethiopian heirloom varieties (Kurume, Dega, Wolisho, JARC 74110, JARC 74123), which build a complex, floral, citrus-forward flavor profile.

Flowering happens in April, with harvest running from November to December.

Processing: natural, Biloya station

Ripe cherries are hand-picked on smallholder farms and delivered to the Biloya station.

The cherries are processed using the natural method — whole fruit, without depulping.

Drying takes place on African drying beds, where the region's lush, semi-forest landscape and community-based farming practices help shape a vibrant, distinctive cup.
