About the farmer and farm
The Nemba washing station is located in the northern province of Kayanza, at 1313 meters above sea level. The farms supplying cherry sit at around 1700 meters near the Kibila forest.
The station is managed by an agronomist who implements good agricultural practices and trains farmers.
1,074 smallholders deliver cherry to Nemba, each owning an average of 150 Red Bourbon trees.
The station partners with Greenco and takes part in an IMPACT-verified livestock support project for Burundian coffee families.
Processing: natural
During harvest season, all coffee is selectively hand-picked, mostly by family members.
Quality control starts as soon as cherry is delivered. It's floated in small tanks, then the higher-quality cherry is hand-sorted again to remove damaged, underripe, and overripe fruit.
The cherries are laid in a thin layer on raised beds, turned frequently for even drying, and covered during rain, the hottest part of the day, and overnight.
